Church Lane Crossing Point

Norfolk Highways contractors will be installing a crossing point on Church Lane near to the junction of Chestnut Hill. The works will create dropped kerbs each side of the road and bolt-down speed cushions on the approaches to this. The speed cushions will slow approaching vehicles and provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians . Unfortunately the works do not include the zebra crossing we had requested which we understand is because of the cost.

The works are scheduled to start on Thursday 28th November through to 6th December and temporary traffic control will be in place. The traffic management should be stop/go boards so that the sequences can be manually controlled. They are aiming to remove them during peak periods and pack the site down enough so that no control is required outside of working hours.

Here is a plan of the works:

Here is the Public Information Notice about the works:

EVRA and Eaton Councillors have campaigned for a crossing point on Church Lane near to Waitrose since 2018 when the 20mph Zone was implemented and it is good to finally see this happening but disappointing that a zebra crossing has not been included in these works. We know from the data recorded by the Eaton SAM sign that around 5000 vehicles a day use that section of Church Lane and that more than 60% of these exceed 20mph with many exceeding 30mph. The data from the past three years shows speeds recorded of up to 65mph on this section of our roads.

Here is a page from recent SAM sign reports showing number of vehicles and max speeds per hour travelling from the Greenways junction towards Eaton Street crossroads and what will be the location of the new crossing point. This is typical and just for one direction so should be doubled for daily traffic flows for that section of Church Lane. The data shows that the maximum speed of vehicles travelling in the opposite direction from the crossroads is around 10mph lower. The sign is located 175 metres from the crossroads.

The summary of SAM sign data for all locations can be read at: Eaton Speed Awareness Monitor (SAM) – Eaton Village Residents’ Association
