Several residents have contacted EVRA recently with photos of their sunflowers which they have grown from the seeds we distributed with our Spring Newsletter. The cunning plan was to ask you to tell us the size of your sunflowers in our Autumn Newsletter to be issued end of August but this has been thwarted by the rather warm and very dry weather which seems to have brought the sunflowers on earlier than expected. We have reports of sunflowers already exceeding 6 feet high (180cms) and starting to go over. (Ours reached around 4 feet and then dropped their petals despite regular watering.)
So, let us start the competition earlier by you telling us how tall your sunflowers are and width of your flower heads. We will come along and check the measurements of the contenders and see which is the tallest and which has the largest head with prizes for the winners of each category. Sunflowers will be measured from the soil around the base to the top of the plant and across the width of the head.
Please tell your neighbours about this, especially if they don’t go online.
